EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB has reported the commencement of construction work for a waste to energy facility in Donetsk, Ukraine.

STOCKHOLM–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In June 2009, the Swedish company EcoEnergy Scandinavia and the Ukrainian government signed Memorandum of understanding on constructing and operating waste incineration plants in Ukraine. Today, EcoEnergy and the Municipality of Donetsk participated in a ceremony in Donetsk in conjunction with the launch of the construction of the first waste to energy plant in Donetsk. With state of the art technology, all the future facilities will lead to large environmental advantages as well as a new cost efficient energy source for Ukraine.
The participants at the ceremony where Mayor of Donetsk city Alexander Lukyanchenko, EcoEnergy Chairman Lars Guldstrand, and Biogasprom Director Valentyn Makogon in presence of other Members of the Parliament and the Mayors from the other 13 cities that are considered for hosting the initially planned facilities.

The construction and operation of the waste to energy plant in Donetsk will handle the solid domestic waste (SDW) accumulated in the city, amounting to 469 000 tons per year. The plant will be an incineration facility producing heat for district heating, warm water and electricity. As an option, there is possibility to build a sorting line where biological waste, metal and glass is sorted out, increasing the energy value of the waste, and a biogas production line, where the biological is transformed into biogas.
